Dermal Fillers Q & A

What Is a Dermal Filler?*

Dermal fillers are substances that are injected under the surface of the skin to fill out areas where tissue loss has occurred. This includes the cheeks, around the eyes and other areas of the face where hollows can cause skin to sag or hang loosely off the face. Dermal fillers are made using different substances including hyaluronic acid, collagen-based injectables, and in some cases, fatty deposits taken from the patient’s own body. The fillers are prepared and then injected into the body to add volume and firmness to the area. Depending on the type of filler used, the skin can also benefit from the hydration effects of the injections.

How Are Dermal Fillers Used?*

As a person ages, the muscles, fats, and other soft tissues begin to gradually decrease in volume. This means that wrinkles and folds can begin to appear in the skin, resulting in sagging and drooping. The areas of the face that are most likely to experience this type of issue include the forehead, around the eyes, the cheeks, jaws, neck and around the mouth. The dermal fillers are injected into the area. Some re-introduce collagen, while others stimulate its production naturally within the skin. When the patient chooses to use their own body fat as a filler, they receive double the benefit. Not only is the fat extracted from where there is an abundance, it is deposited in an area where there is too little, adding volume and elasticity.

How Long Do Dermal Fillers Last?*

The results of a dermal fill procedure can last for several years, depending on the type of filler used and where it is being injected. Degradable fillers, such as those made of body fat and collagen, can last anywhere from six months to two or three years. When fillers are used, the results can last for a long time. Unlike Botox® injections that may only last a few months, or maybe a year at most, dermal fillers are designed to last much longer and continue to keep the skin looking fresh and vibrant. By adding volume to the tissues underneath, the skin regains its elasticity, reducing wrinkles and decreasing the sagging effects of gravity.
