Laser Hair Removal Q & A

How Effective Is Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal therapy is one of the most precise hair removal techniques in use today. Lasers are used to target the coarsest, darker-colored hairs in a specific area. While the hairs are treated, the surrounding skin is left untouched. Unwanted hair can easily be removed from the face, legs, arms, chest, back, and bikini area. Each pulse or shot of the laser can target several hairs at one time with a normal treatment area similar in size to a quarter. It takes anywhere from three to seven sessions to begin to see permanent hair loss in certain areas. In areas where the hair is very dark and coarse, it may take at least seven sessions for the patient to begin to see noticeable results.

Where Can the Treatment Be Used?

Laser hair removal treatments can be used almost anywhere on the body where hair is capable of growing. It is easily used to remove fine hairs that often appear on the arms, back, neck and face. It is also used to remove the coarser, darker hairs that grow on a man’s body, generally in the areas of the chest, legs, face, and groin area. Women who frequently receive bikini waxes can have laser hair removal performed in the same area and eliminate the red, irritated skin that often accompanies a painful wax treatment. While finer, lighter hairs may be removed with just two or three treatments, the darker, coarser hair of the legs, groin and chest may require five or more laser treatments.

Is Laser Hair Removal Painful?

Laser hair removal is not necessarily considered to be painful. Some patients have reported that it feels as if someone is snapping a rubber band against the surface of the skin, while others claim to feel a mild tingling sensation. Any tingling or feelings associated with the laser treatment only last for a short period of time. Once the treatment is over, the skin may take on a pinkish or reddish tint. The treatment area may be sensitive to the touch for the next few days, but minimal discomfort is the norm. After three or four days, any discomfort that was noticed immediately after the procedure is no longer an issue.
